Note

Similarly: tři miliardy, čtyři miliardy, pět miliard ...

The word miliarda is a feminine noun.

Warning

A potential source of confusion:

In Czech, miliarda means 1 x 109 (1,000,000,000), which is equivalent to billion in English.

However, the Czech bilion means 1 x 1012 (1,000,000,000,000), which corresponds to trillion in English (short scale).

CZE Value ENG
miliarda 109 billion
bilion 1012 trillion (short scale)
trilion 1018 trillion (long scale)
quintillion

Combinations - Kombinace

When combined, cardinal numerals are simply placed one after another, starting from the highest unit.

dvacet pět

sto dvacet pět

tisíc sto dvacet pět

dvanáct tisíc sto dvacet pět

dvacet tři tisíc sto dvacet pět

sto dvacet tři tisíc sto dvacet pět

milion sto dvacet tři tisíc sto dvacet pět

dvacet pět milionů sto dvacet tři tisíc sto dvacet pět

When compound numerals are declined, each component follows its respective declension:

23 000

NOM GEN DAT ACC VOC LOC INS
dvacet tři tisíc dvaceti tří tisíc dvaceti třem tisícům dvacet tři tisíc dvacet tři tisíc dvaceti třech tisicích dvaceti třemi tisíci

Inversion of 21 - 99

For numbers between 21 - 99, inversion is possible.

  • Non-inverted form:

    21 = dvacet jedna

    22 = dvacet dva

    23 = dvacet tři ...

  • Inverted form:

    21 = jednadvacet

    22 = dvaadvacet

    23 = třiadvacet ...

The inverted form is written as one word, connected by a between the lower and higher digits. Note: there's only one a in jednadvacet.

Grammatically, only the final part of the inverted numeral is declined, which simplifies usage compared to the non-inverted form, where both parts must change.

Note

The choice between inverted and non-inverted forms is a matter of personal preference.

Variants of 1 100 - 1 900

There are two ways to express numbers from 1,100 to 1,900:

  • tisíc sto (one thousand and one hundred) or
  • jedenáct set (eleven hundred).

See the examples:

  • tisíc sto

  • jedenáct set

  • tisíc dvě stě

  • dvanáct set

  • tisíc tři sta

  • třináct set

  • tisíc čtyři sta

  • čtrnáct set

  • tisíc pět set

  • patnáct set

  • tisíc šest set

  • šestnáct set

  • tisíc sedm set

  • sedmnáct set

  • tisíc osm set

  • osmnáct set

  • tisíc devět set

  • devatenáct set

Counted object - Počítaný předmět

A counted object is the entity being quantified by a cardinal numeral. In Czech, the grammatical case and the number of the counted object depends on the numeral.

Numeral Case Example
1 NOM SG jeden student, jeden počítač, jedna škola, jedno auto
2 NOM PL dva studenti, dva počítače, dvě školy, dvě auta
3 NOM PL tři studenti, tři počítače, tři školy, tři auta
4 NOM PL čtyři studenti, čtyři počítače, čtyři školy, čtyři auta
0, 5 and higher GEN PL nula studentů, pět studentů, pět počítačů, pět škol, pět aut, třicet jedna studentů
půl (half) GEN SG půl roku, dva a půl roku, čtyři a půl měsíce

When the counted object is not the subject, the case is determined by syntax (prepositions, verbs).

Examples

s pěti studenty (INS), o dvou kamarádech (GEN), pro jednu studentku (ACC)

Substantivization

It is very common, especially in spoken Czech, to say or write e.g. osmička, instead of číslo osm.

The form osmička can refer to any object identified by the number (e.g., a bus line, a device model).

Note

These forms are feminine and follow the 1st declension group (model word škola).

For compound numbers like 21, multiple substantivised forms are possible:

21

  • dvacet jednička (cardinal + substantivised)
  • dvacítka jednička (both substantivised)
  • jednadvacítka (inverted and substantivised)

When the original name is plural, the substantivised numeral may also take the plural form.

For example:

Windows 10 → Windows desítky
Windows 11 → Windows jedenáctky

This is particularly common in informal Czech.

  1. Allowed variant (used more rarely than dvou tisíc): dvou tisíců (analogously: třech tisíc or třech tisíců etc.). ↩

  2. However, an older pattern that considers the gender of the quantified object is still in use. Compare:

    • dvacet jedna studentů (dominant these days) vs. dvacet jeden student.

    Analogously:

    • dvacet jedna studentek vs. dvacet jedna studentka
    • dvacet jedna aut vs. dvacet jedno auto.

    This also influcences the case for the counted object. When unified form dvacet jedna is used, the object is always in genitive plural; when dvacet jeden/jedna/jedno is used, the object stays in the nominative singular (as after simple jeden/jedna/jedno). ↩
