Verbs of motion - Slovesa pohybu

Basic information

Verbs of motion refer to movement.

This is a broad category in Czech, and various principles are used to specify the type of motion. It is highly recommended to check the meaning of a particular verb in a dictionary.

The four most common verbs of motion are:

Determinate Indeterminate Comment
jít chodit go on foot, walking
běžet běhat run
jet jezdit go using a vehicle, drive
letět létat fly by plane, helicopter ...

Determinate verbs describe a single, one-directional, non-repeated action. It is an action determined by space or time.

Indeterminate verbs describe habitual or repeated activities.

The sentence Jdu do kina. (I am going to the cinema.) uses the determinate verb jít to indicate an action that ends when the subject reaches their destination.

The sentence Každý týden chodím do kina. (I go to the movies every week.) uses the indeterminate verb chodit to describe a repeated activity that has no expressed end.

Verbs of motion can be imperfective (jít, chodit, etc.) or perfective (přijít, odjet, etc.). 1

Determinate verbs without prefixes are always imperfective.

Determinate verbs with prefixes are always perfective.

Indeterminate verbs (with or without prefixes) are always imperfective.
